Kudos to Lester

I don't bash the Sox just for the sake of bashing. I am also not so blindly pro-Yanks to wish a hearty congrats to Jon Lester, who just finished off a no-hitter tonite. It's on thing to throw a no-hitter; it's entirely another thing if the pitcher is still recovering from lymphoma.

On August 27th, 2006 Lester was scratched from his scheduled start against the Oakland Athletics due to a sore back. The following day he was placed on the 15 day disabled list (retroactive to August 24th, 2006), and was sent back to Boston for testing. At the time, Lester's back problems were thought to be the result of a car crash he was involved in on August 18th, 2006. On August 31st it was reported that Lester had been diagnosed with enlarged lymph nodes and was being tested for a variety of ailments, including forms of cancer [3]. On September 1st, doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital confirmed that Lester had a treatable form of anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

My wife recently returned to work full time for the American Cancer Society so maybe I'm more attuned and sensitive to cancer and survivors, but this is just great.

My hat's off to Lester for his courage and perserverence.

what, is this ESPN the blog or something? We know Lester had freakin cancer, and he recovered from it. ESPN has to remind us of it 14 times per Lester appearance, and now you too Jason? Come on, you're better than that. Congrats to him and all, but enough with this cancer stuff

Anon, I guess I am not 'better than that'. Cancer's not the sniffles. What this kid did to come back from this disease, to throw a no-hitter, no less, is nothing short of amazing.

and, note my sensitivities to this, as I mentioned in the posting: "My wife recently returned to work full time for the American Cancer Society so maybe I'm more attuned and sensitive to cancer and survivors, but this is just great."

I won't look past the cancer survivor aspect of this just because others are keying on it, too.

I'll continue to develop my own voice and style here, but when someone does something extraordinary, I want to recognize it.

Hope you can respect that choice.

thanks for taking the time to comment. I sincerely appreciate it as it allowed me to expand on my thoughts.

eh, I guess I owe ya an apology, last night I wasn't in the greatest mood having the last 2 no hitters thrown by Boston kids, plus the facts the Yanks have been stinking it up, the evil Spurs won, and the whole cancer thing being mentioned 100 times. Just read what I wrote again, and I really didn't mean to come off that way

Anon: It's all good. You're entitled to your opinion in these parts.

I don't like it any more than you that the Sox' youngsters are living up to their promise than our guys are. I also don't like the way the Yanks are playing. That they are losing is merely a by-product of the way they are playing, as I see it.

As for the Spurs, well, you might be the first person referring to them as "evil". I've heard "boring" plenty o'times, but never "evil". To each his own, I guess.

I can't stand any Texas teams, Cowbodys, Mavs, Spurs, etc... Mainly started because Jerry Jones tries to be the Steinbrenner of the NFL, but can't (nobody can every really be good ole' George) and I extremely dislike T.O. and Dirk. Blah, Texas...

oh, and I forgot how they stole that series from the Suns last year (or the NBA did actually). That didn't help
