I thought this would have been a reasonable low-cost risk: Bring Andruw Jones into camp as a non-roster invitee (non-guaranteed contract) and see what he can do. Let him duke it out with Melky and Gardner and see if he can recapture some of his past mojo, despite what the reports out of the Caribbean say (or say here).
But noooooooooooooooo: ...the Yankees had offered Jones a non-roster invitation to Spring Training, ostensibly to compete for the center-field job, but the proposal was rejected.
[...]
Jones is already promised nearly $16 million over the next six years from the Dodgers, but he is looking for the financial guarantee and roster stability of a Major League contract.

Rumour has it, that much like Henry Wiggins and Bruce Pearson from 'Bang the Drum Slowly', Andruw, in a burst of patriotic pride, insisted that fellow countryman Sir Sidney Ponson be brought along also.
See, you could have a two-for-one deal.
A starting CF'er, and a starting Pitcher.
Think of how many posts you could get out of that this season.
Well, Andruw's from Curacao and Ponson's from Aruba... but both Dutch territories (?).
blech!
I guess he didn't want the constant reminder that he'll be part of Torre's next book.
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know the dollar numbers on the offer? I realize it was a minor league invite, but there had to be some numbers involved, anyone hear anything?
