Signing Youk a good move

The latest in a string of good moves (that conveniently excludes Julio Lugo and Bartolo Colon and Eric Gagne), the Sox signed Kevin Youkilis to a multi-year extension, avoiding arbitration.

Multiple baseball sources confirmed today that the Red Sox and first baseman Kevin Youkilis reached agreement on a four-year, $41 million contract extension through 2012, a deal that also includes a $13 million club option for 2013 that could bring the deal to $53 million over five seasons.
This is a win-win for both sides. The genius of Theo is often overstated, but that's a fair deal for a solid corner player in the prime of his career.

He'll be going into his age 34 (or 35 with the option) season for his next contract.. Just in time for Anderson to be raking.

He'll be moved to 3B as soon as Lars is ready

Correct, but Lars will be hitting up to or beyond Youk's level at that point and thus the Sawx would be able to sustain the apparent loss. Granted, Lars may never be that good of a hitter, but it's still a great deal.

I actually thought the Colon signing was working out marvelously until ol' Bartolo had to hit during interleague play (another reason to support the DH in both leagues, IMHO). Gagne just blew up in their faces, but aside from some peripherals, all signs indicated he was pitching well with TX, no? Lugo...indefensible.

Mark, given the Smoltz defection, are you adopting the Sox as your second team, or am I late to the party as usual?

Expanding the DH to the NL was my little secret crazy idea that put into my suggested "Commish for a day" posting.

Pitchers hitting: why is this such a great idea? What's so charming about that?

Tad, but I was complimentary towards the sox, and deservedly so. Bank that for some time when I am unnecessarily off-base, OK?

Tad,

No, the Red Sox are not my second team (Seattle for whatever reason might qualify there as they hold an odd place in heart). I just appreciate good decisions and organizations run well. Heck, on occasion, I've even applauded the Yankees, and I hate them. Granted, it could work out terribly, but Youk plays a position that keeps people healthy, usually. As for Anderson, I've only heard great things about him.
