When good fans go bad

Yeah, yeah, yeah...I'm a Yanks fan. I understand the hate. I can live with it. I also understand the RedSox Nation. I dig their fervor, passion, knowledge, allegiance (not Affleck or pink hats, though). I respect them as competitors. They make my team work harder to be better. I also like to think that deep down, they feel the same way. Yes, I know they hate the MFY, but I'm not sure if SunTsu said it, but you must respect the enemy.

All that said, there is ZERO room for this sorta thing:

A group of men — some with Irish accents — beat up a 23-year-old Cambridge man and sent him to the hospital after they spotted him sporting a Yankees baseball cap.

The Yankees fan was transported to the hospital March 2 at 1:41 a.m. for medical treatment for head injuries, including swelling over his entire face and several facial cuts, according to police reports.

That the paper felt compelled to mention the Irish accents is completely unnecessary except to exacerbate the stereotypes. A waste of 4 words. They may as well called them 'racists', too. But, I digress...

I'm in no way saying that this doesn't occur on "our turf", but it doesn't belong anywhere, period. I am, however, very curious to see if there's any outcry against Boston fans as there surely would be if a fan wearing a Boston hat got jumped in NYC ("Those Yanks fans are louts, thugs, obnoxious, dangerous and evil...blah blah blah")

I'm waiting for the follow-up stories, where the fight was about a girl or something and the guy who got beat up just happened to be wearing a NY cap.
