Vote For Manny

In a fit of insanity, I created a new site called "Vote for Manny". Why would I possibly try to help Manny get elected as a starter to the 2009 All Star Game?

Simple.

I think it'd be wonderful to watch MLB (Selig & Co.) uncomfortably try to figure out a new policy on the fly to keep him out of the game. Rather than proactively inact a rule similar to the NFL's "Shawne Merriman rule", the league is simply hoping that good ole Manny doesn't get voted as a starter. They can then strongarm manager Charlie Manuel into not selecting Manny. (Even if Torre is his bench coach!)

Except one thing: We're here to make sure Manny makes the Top 3.

Guess what? He's already at #4 with over 1.2 million votes.

So what can you do?

VOTE FOR MANNY.

Vote early and often, kids.

My quick thoughts on the stupidity surrounding the All Star game:

If I were Commish for a day, I'd do the following about the All Star Game (note the OR between the 2nd and 3rd points):

  • Eliminate the World Series home field advantage gimmick. PERIOD. Let the overall records decide who EARNED the home field advantage.
  • Eliminate mandatory representation by every club. It was one thing when there just twenty-something teams, but with 30, too many inferior players are being named at the expense of more qualified players.
    OR:
  • Expand the roster sizes to accomodate the expansion in the number of teams. If you do this, you can keep mandatory representation. Open the rosters to 35 and eliminate the handwringing.

My sights/thoughts from the last ASG (@ Yankee Stadium):

Awesome. I just put a couple of votes in for him. Just for good measure, I also put in a couple of Matt Wieters votes. It would be even better than Manny making it if a AAA player made it to the All-Star game despite the Orioles keeping him in the minors for salary reasons.

The home field advantage gimmick is total bullshit. Say you have a guy on a last place team with absolutely no hope of making the playoffs, and he hits a game winning All Star Game RBI. You've got a guy with no vested interest (say he plays for Pittsburgh) in the World Series, yet he just decided who gets home field. That's just ridiculous. Home field should either be based on records, or alternating years.

As for the mandatory representation, that's bullshit too. All Stars are All Stars no matter who they play for, and if everybody on the Reds roster sucks, then too bad. I also think fans should not be allowed to vote. Too many "homers", too much of a popularity contest.

But that's just my worthless opinion.

Making Selig sweat is pretty easy, and most amusing, so Jason, as much as I detest Manny, I'd love to see this happen.

Aw, man...I had finally gotten to the point where I didn't feel compelled to participate in the ASG ridiculousness, and now you gotta go and make the cause worthy again. Every time I think I'm out they pull me back in!

I'll do anything to make that douche Selig get boob sweat. Thanks, Jason.

everyone needs to get off their MORAL soapbox's and tone down their enthusiasm to take a knock on sports athletes that they are envious of....unless of course you are morally perfect...throw the first stone
